The Lewis Freedom Gift of Flight was established in 2021 by long time Condor Aero Club members, Jan and Linda Lewis. Jan has been afforded tremendous opportunities in aviation through his extensive and accomplished career. His and Linda’s passion for excellence in aviation are infectious. They established this Gift Fund to support aviators with great dreams and strong passions to reach into the skies.

Gifts Fund(s) Available:

  • Private Pilot Certificate: $4,250.00
  • Instrument Rating: $2,250.00
  • Commercial Pilot Certificate: $2,250.00

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Current Condor Aero Club Member at time of application and award
  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident
  • Must have a current FAA Medical or Basic Med
  • Must have taken and passed the FAA Private Pilot Written Knowledge Exam
  • Must have a Private Pilot (For Instrument Gift Award)
  • Must have an Instrument Rating (For Commercial Gift Award)
  • Must demonstrate a financial need

  1. Candidate should determine their eligibility, and read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for this Program below.
  2. Candidate should complete the Lewis Freedom of Flight Gift application by the application deadline.
  3. The Lewis Freedom of Flight Gift Committee will review each application in detail to determine the awards.
  4. Application shall be notified of the decision by the May Condor Membership Meeting) and funds will be deposited into the applicant’s flying account at Condor Aero Club.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I apply?

The Gift application will open from February 6, 2024 to April 30, 2024 at 11:59 (EST).

How does the recommendation process work?

On your application, you will enter the names and email addresses of two references. Once you submit your application, the committee may reach out to those references. Please make them aware that the Gift Award committee may reach out!

How will I be notified if I’m chosen as a recipient of a gift?

If you are awarded a gift, you will receive an award email sent to the email address listed on your application. Please list an email address that you check often!

Can I print the application and mail it to you?

No, paper applications will not be accepted.

Can I donate to the Lewis Freedom Gift of Flight fund?

Yes! While we have generous donors that are funding the gift fund annually, more funds are welcome and we can make more impact to the aviation community. You can contribute directly to Condor Aero Club, Inc. Condor Aero Club, Inc. is a 501c7 organization and donations are not tax deductible.

Are there exceptions for late applications or recommendations?

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. No exceptions will be made for missing the final application deadline April 30, 2024, 11:59 p.m. EST

I didn’t get awarded a gift award the last time I applied. Should I apply again?

Of course! There are many outstanding people who would benefit from a flight training gift. Please note all applications are cleared after the gift recipients are selected. If still eligible, you must submit a new application for each award cycle to ensure we’re reviewing the most current information.

If I am awarded gift, how do I get the money?

If you are a gift recipient, the funds are provided to you directly into your Condor Aero Club Flight Account. Proceeds may only be used for flight time and credit against dues and insurance.

What can I use the money for?

If you are a gift recipient, you may use the money for Condor dues, insurance, and flight time. The funds are not intended to be withdrawn for other purposes. Any unused funds after 12 months will be returned to the Lewis Freedom Gift of Flight fund.

If I am awarded a gift, how long do I have to obtain my certificate/rating?

Gift recipients have 12 months from the time they are awarded to obtain their certificate/rating and utilize Gift funding. After 12 months, any unused funds will be returned to the Gift Fund.

What GPA should I use, weighted or unweighted?

Your GPA should be based on the unweighted method of calculating a GPA and be provided using a 4.0 scale.

What am I required to turn in with my application?

Applicants must complete an online application that includes:

  1. Completed application details
  2. Two (2) recommending references
  3. 250 word essay on why you are pursuing the Gift award
  4. Demonstrate a financial need by disclosing income and expense information
